Ex-Terp Walker transfers to Loyola
Saturday, 07 June 2008

ImageBaltimore Sun: Shane Walker, a 6-foot-10 power forward who made a cameo appearance at Maryland last season, has transferred to Loyola College.

Walker had negligible statistics as a freshman with the Terps, averaging just 5.3 minutes in 24 games. Coach Gary Williams announced in April that Walker was leaving.

Since then, two more Terps -- Gus Gilchrist and Tyree Evans -- were granted releases.

"We wouldn't get a guy like this out of high school, he's just too good," Loyola coach Jimmy Patsos said. "We've fallen into good graces. What's most important to me is, we get a guy from a school that made 15 straight postseason appearances."

Patsos spent 15 seasons as an assistant under Williams at Maryland and just completed his fourth year at Loyola. His College Park connection also helped the Greyhounds get Hassan Fofana when he left Maryland early in the 2004-05 season.

Purple Eagles sign Dutch center
Wednesday, 04 June 2008

ImageNiagara Gazette: The Niagara University men’s basketball team got smaller on Monday — and a whole lot bigger Tuesday.

Luuk Kortekaas, a Dutch center who stands close to 7-feet, signed a letter of intent Tuesday to play for the Purple Eagles next season.

“He’s every bit of 6-11. If he’s not 6-11, he’s taller,” an excited coach Joe Mihalich said Tuesday morning by phone from the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Niagara Falls, where he was sending off his newest player. “Basketball is a big man’s game, and we’re going to be a team next year that needs size.”

Kortekaas will effectively assume the roster spot vacated by Andrew Patterson, a swingman who has played sparingly for Niagara the past three seasons, but intends to transfer to Division II Bellarmine University, according to a report Monday in the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Canisius Inks Two for 2008-09 Season
Thursday, 29 May 2008

ImageGo Griffs: Canisius College men's basketball coach Tom Parrotta announced today that Brett Chance (Oviedo, Fla.) and AJ Hawkins (Duluth, Ga.) signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Golden Griffins' roster for the 2008-09 season.

We are happy to welcome these two young men into our program because they both played for extremely successful teams at the high school level, Parrotta said. They have been a part of state championship teams in very competitive classifications and were integral parts of their teams success. Both of these players wanted to be a part of our rebuilding process here at Canisius and that speaks volumes about their character.

Chance is a 6-foot-2 guard who averaged 17 points, five rebounds and four assists per game in his senior season at Lake Howell High School. He closed out his scholastic career by being named the Seminole County Player of the Year and was also honored as a Class 5A third-team all-state selection after the 2007-08 campaign, where he helped lead Lake Howell to a 24-6 record. Last season, Chance was the only returning player from the Silver Hawks 2007 state championship team that featured current Florida Gators Nick Calathes and Chandler Parsons and Virginia Commonwealth guard Joey Rodriguez.
